This article has been approved by the National Association for Neonatal Nurses Certification Board for Category B credit toward recertification as an NNP.

Purpose of Activity

To present a study conducted to improve acute and chronic pain measurements for neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through implementation of the Neonatal Pain, Agitation, and Sedation Scale (N-PASS).

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Identify the challenges involved and the proficiency required for assessing and managing neonatal pain.
  2. Outline the methods used to implement the N-PASS and educate NICU providers on its use.
  3. Compare the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) with the N-PASS.
