Purpose of Activity

To provide information on current issues affecting infusion nursing practice.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Select implications of increasing short peripheral catheter (SPC) dwell time from 72 to 96 hours using a bundled approach to SPC care and management.
  2. Recognize the consequences of nurses compounding antibiotics for outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy.
  3. Recognize the incidence, causes, signs and symptoms, and psychosocial consequences of a thrombus in a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC).
  4. Identify the effect of using an electronic tablet to provide patient education for flushing PICCs on the incidence of PICC occlusions.
  5. Discern the relationship between short peripheral catheter (SPC) failure and etiologies such as thrombus, subcutaneous edema, and catheter dislodgment using ultrasonography.
