Description
Although screening colonoscopy has been shown to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), the potential benefit from widespread implementation of the current guidelines for CRC screening has yet to be fully realized. In many cases, poor adherence with the bowel-preparation regimen leads to inadequate cleansing and incomplete visualization of the colon. This CE activity will focus on the pivotal role of gastroenterology nurses in encouraging appropriate patients to undergo CRC screening, following evidence-based guidelines for screening, becoming more knowledgeable about the various bowel-prep protocols, and helping patients to effectively prepare for colonoscopy.Purpose of Activity
In order to improve the effectiveness of colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening, this continuing education (CE) activity will provide evidence-based practice guidelines on bowel preparation and strategies to improve adherence to the bowel cleansing regimen.Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:
- Identify the consequences of suboptimal bowel preparation.
- Implement procedures to support patient adherence to bowel preparation regimens to minimize the chances that a repeat screening is required.
- Review the updated ACG recommendations for CRC screening and the implications for nursing practice.
- Review the potential advantages of novel bowel-preparation regimens with patients preparing to undergo CRC screening.
