Purpose of Activity

To provide information about the evaluation process for patients undergoing deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) reconstruction and the unique complexities of postoperative nursing care for these patients.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Explain the differences between the transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap (TRAM) flap and the DIEP flap, and the evaluation process of patients prior to surgery.
  2. Describe postoperative care, possible complications, and discharge instructions for patients following DIEP reconstructive surgery.
