Purpose of Activity

To provide information about secondary traumatic stress experienced by emergency nurses who care for critically ill trauma patients, the psychic distress experienced by trauma patients and appropriate interventions for both groups.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Discern the prevalence and symptoms of traumatic stress in emergency nurses and coping behaviors used to manage traumatic stress.
  2. Identify the correlation of proactive coping behaviors and traumatic stress and the framework and measurement tools used to assess the correlation in this study of emergency nurses.
  3. Recognize secondary traumatic stress (STS) and its prevalence among nurses caring for trauma patients.
  4. Select the significant findings derived from a study on STS in emergency nurses.
  5. Identify the prevalence and correlation of psychic impairments in hand-injured patients.
  6. Recognize the need for a comprehensive assessment of coping skills and strategies used by hand-injured patients.
  7. Recognize the goals of a Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) and barrier to implementation.
