Purpose of Activity

To provide information on current issues affecting infusion nursing practice.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Select the indications, dosing, potential benefits, and adverse effects of milrinone as well as issues related to the management of a pediatric patient receiving outpatient intravenous milrinone.
  2. Specify the clinical effects, diagnosis, complications, and management of and risk factors for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
  3. Identify risk factors for the development of central line-associated bloodstream infections and interven- tions to prevent or decrease the incidence of these infections.
  4. Discuss the results of studies examining the clearing of nonpatent non-hemodialysis central vascular access devices and one facility's experience using a reduced dose of alteplase in restoring patency to those catheters.
  5. Explain quality issues related to infusion nursing practice and the application of the Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies and the Infusion Nurses Society's Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice.
